I'm a huge fan of blogs. I remember when I didn't even know what a blog was, and now my list of Favorites on Internet Explorer is overflowing with at least a hundred wonderful blogs that I love to visit!!

I've met some incredible people, I've learned a lot, and I've discovered many new ideas, as well as different ways of looking at the world and all through visiting my favorite blogs. Some blogs I visit to savor the beautiful images the blogger shares with her readers, some blogs I visit to get coupons and freebies, some blogs I visit to socialize, some blogs I visit for inspiration, and some blogs I visit to learn about a specific topic. Oh, and I almost forgot (kidding!)....some blogs I visit for the sole purpose of entering giveaways!!

"Giveaways?" you ask. Yes, giveaways! One of the fun things I learned due to my daily blog hopping is about the ever so enticing World of Giveaways!!

So, I'm visiting various blogs to enter the 3rd Cottage Charm Giveaway (link is on the right sidebar), and I come to Made 2 Create. Now, she did something very unique as a way to enter her giveaway. Tutoring

So, today was a pretty good day. I tutor two kids, one in first grade, (I'll call him D.), and one in fourth grade, (I'll call him J.). I absolutely LOVE working with both of these kids, and they are so different from each other, too.

This was my first experience working with a first grader, and it's honestly been amazing to me to see the growth that happens in such a short amount of time. When I started working with D. he was still learning his letters. Now he is reading level one and level two books....chapter books even!! He's not reading perfectly, of course, but he's reading!! Each time I see him I'm always thrilled to see the progress he's made and continues to make.

When I was a teacher I actually taught fourth grade so I had that experience before I began working with J. I've been working with him longer than D., and he, too, has made so much progress. A lot of his progress has been in attitude about school and his grades, his willingness to do his best, and to do his best neatly. He continues to surprise me with his feelings toward school and learning, as well as his academic growth. I think back to how he was when I first met him, and then I think of the excitement in his voice when he told me about getting the highest grade in his class on a math test. It's like he's a different kid!!

You know, I understand that I'm giving a lot to these kids, but I honestly feel that I'm still getting the better end of the deal. The joy, the pride, the excitement, and the sense of accomplishment I feel when working with both D. and J. makes any physical pain (due to my two chronic pain conditions) I feel as a result so worth it. When I see the lightbulb come on when they finally understand something that we've been working on or hear them say with a smile, "Ooooh, I get it!" it just fills my heart up more than anyone can understand.

Well, I'm ready to get to bed after watching Part 2 of "The Bachelor- After the Final Rose," but before I sign off for tonight, I want to share one cute thing that J. said to me before I left today. I'm gathering my things up, and he says, "Ms. Rice, do you think you can come some Friday to just hang out, watch movies, eat junk food, and....just hang out?" How cute is that?!

Two Truths and a Lie, Some Q&A's, and My Holiday Party

**I actually typed this post several weeks ago, but I was having a problem with the pictures and couldn't get it to publish. Also, there are more photos that need to be added to this post once I figure out what the problem is.**

Because I'm new to blogging and haven't figured out how to find out the stats for visitors to my blog, I didn't know that anyone was reading. Well, today I found a comment on my January 28, 2009 blog from Wendy, who has her own blog with a great name. It's called "Weight...What?". You should pay her blog a visit, and you can even play the game she has going on now called "Two Truths and a Lie". She invited those with a blog to consider themselves tagged (my first one...YAY!!), so here goes!

Okay, here are my two truths and a lie. See if you can figure out which one is the lie, and leave your answer in my comment section. You can also leave your two truths and a lie in the comment section, and I'll follow Wendy's lead and have any readers that I may have out there tagged, too. In other words, if you have a blog, you can put your two truths and a lie on your blog with a link back to mine.

Two Truths and a Lie

1. After our first trip to Hawaii, my friend and I packed up our bags and moved there for two years.

2. I've climbed a volcano and a waterfall.

3. When I was a kid, I spent two summers traveling cross-country in a van with my family and camped in almost every state along the way.

So, which one do you think is the lie?

Now to answer Wendy's questions:

Q: Where do you find all these giveaways?

A: I'm signed up to receive the RSS feeds for a whole bunch of blogs, and when they offer giveaways, I enter them. Some blogs are strictly review and giveaway blogs, and those are the ones that have a lot to enter on a consistent basis. If you are interested in entering some giveaways, you can always click on the links on my blog that will take you to the place to enter them.

Q: How did your dinner party last month go?

A: Thank you so much for asking! The dinner party (actually a holiday party) was a huge success! It was on December 13, 2008, and everyone that came had a great time! Just look at the two reindeer (a.k.a. my cousins, Brittney and Emily) in the picture below for evidence!

One of the hits of the party was an ornament exchange that I called, "Steal the Ornament," which was actually a suggestion from my Uncle Bob, seen here.

If you're not familiar with this, the way it works is that everyone brings a wrapped ornament, and they all go onto one table. Then you draw numbers to see who gets to choose the first package. The next person to choose an ornament has a choice to either choose from the pile of wrapped ones or steal the first person's ornament! You continue playing in this format with each new person getting the choice to choose from the pile of wrapped ornaments or steal from those who already have opened their ornaments. This is why you hope that the number you drew at the beginning was a high one because the higher the number, the more chances to steal!! Oh, each ornament can only be stolen twice, and if your ornament was stolen, you get to pick another one from the pile or steal from someone else. Anyway, it was a ton of fun, and everyone loved it.

Speaking of ornaments, my grandma, seen with me in the next photo, brought me a very special hostess gift. Years ago she used to make these beautiful Christmas ornaments with fancy beads, rhinestones, pearls, and pins, etc., and she gave me the red one I'm holding up in the photo. It's definitely something that will always make me think of her when I see it on my tree every year.

I also received two pretty Christmas Cacti from my cousin Veronica and her husband John, as well as an adorable dolphin statue from my Aunt Deanna, her partner, Charlie, and Brittney and Emily.

Aside from the "Steal an Ornament" game, my mom and I made a ton of yummy appetizers. Three of the recipes I had never made before. I found them on the Better Home and Gardens website. These were double-quick shrimp cocktail, served with large shrimp, pesto-provolone terrine, served with french bread, and brie with mango chutney, served with Carr's Table Water Crackers .

I very highly recommend the pesto-provolone terrine !! It was so yummy and oh-so-easy to make! The brie was good, too, but next time I'd make it with a fig chutney instead because the mango chutney didn't quite do it for me.

I served another shrimp appetizer that's super quick to make. All you do is take a brick of cream cheese, and put it on a serving dish. Pour about 1/2 to 3/4 of a bottle of cocktail sauce over the cream cheese, and top it off with baby shrimp. Serve with Wheat Thins Crackers. It doesn't get much easier than that!

To finish off the appetizer menu, I served spinach dip with french bread, veggies and dip, Harvest Cheddar SunChips , and my mom brought meatballs and a Hillshire Farms Lil' Smokies recipe.

What would a party be without dessert? Veronica brought a delish chocolate cheesecake! There were also lots of different types of chocolate candy, candy canes, and a gorgeous, yummy cake from this awesome bakery.

Since I chose to not decorate in traditional Christmas colors and instead went with a pink, aqua, white, and silver shabby chic look, I wanted the cake to have that same style. I used the same bakery that I had discovered when getting a cake for my mom and dad's 40th wedding anniversary "party" because they had done such a great job.

The bakery is called Jen's Cakes, and let me tell you, Jen is nothing short of amazing!! All I did was ask for a shabby chic Christmas cake, sent her a few pictures with the colors I liked, and she made the perfect cake!! And to top it off, she had just had her first baby two weeks before!!

Q: Were you able to find space for everyone?

A:I was able to find space for everyone, but it was definitely a tight squeeze! I had the party when we were having super cold weather for California (it was in the 30's at night), and I couldn't use the heater because my Christmas tree was in front of it. Well, I guess if I wanted to meet some cute firemen, I could have used the heater...LOL! Anyway, I was worried about it being freezing in here, but because there were so many people in such a tiny space, it actually got too hot for me.

Anyway, the party was a big success, and I think I've decided to make it an annual tradition. If more people come this year though, I may have to move to a bigger place, LOL!!

Shopping, Cleaning, and Giveaways

Well, Saturday is my first ever family holiday get-together that I'm hosting, and it's been a super busy week for me trying to get my apartment straightened up and looking nice. My apartment is always clean, but it gets disorganized and cluttered pretty quickly because it's so small. So, while dealing with this pain flare-up, I've been working on trying to create enough space for twelve people to sit and to be able to move around in without tripping on each other. Quite a feat when the apartment is only 600 sq. feet in total, and since the party is only in the living room area.....well, let's just say it's good thing we all like each other!! I'm excited for Saturday, though and am hoping it all turns out as nice as I'm thinking it will.

Mom and I had plans to go grocery shopping today to get all the food for Saturday. Well, you know what they say about best laid plans?

Because I have RSD and Fibromyalgia, I'm unable to do some of the cleaning in my apartment, such as the tub and vacuuming, so the insurance company pays for a cleaning crew to come twice a month. I called yesterday to find out what time they'd be here today, and I was told noon. Therefore, Mom and I planned to leave to go grocery shopping at 1:30. Well, that was the plan.....that is until I see that it's 1:30, and the cleaning crew is still not here!

By the time they got here it was almost 2:00, so we made a quick change of plans. We decided to go to Target to get some other things for the party and also get some of the food that was cheaper at Target than the grocery store. We had to hurry, though because Mom needed to leave for my grandma's house by 5:00 since she's spending the night there and needed to relieve Bless, one of the caregivers. In the end, we wound up doing exactly what we didn't want to do......rush, rush, rush, only finish half our lists, rush, rush, rush, and not get to use all our coupons. Very frustrating, but at least we got a start on what needs to be done as far as the shopping is concerned, and we'll just have to finish the rest of it tomorrow.

It's going to be another busy day as we will also start some of the cooking tomorrow. Depending on how I'm feeling, Mom may end up doing the rest of the shopping for me so that I can save my energy for the cooking and finishing up the last of the decorating.

Update and Giveaways

Well, I haven't posted in awhile, and I still need to blog about my trip to Monterey. I finally got a few of the pictures from my dad's digital camera so that I can post them with the blog.

Today, I spent the day decorating my Christmas tree and starting to decorate the rest of the apartment. My mom and dad came over about noon, and Cookie, the youngest of my two younger sisters, came over for about an hour to help a little bit. I'm going to borrow my dad's camera to take pictures of my tree and my whole apartment, once it's finished, and then I'll post them here to share, along with the Monterey trip photos and blog. Back From Monterey and Giveaways

I'm home from Monterey now, and we had a fun time. I will share the details, and if I can figure it out, some pictures from the trip in a few days. I haven't slept since the few hours I got in the wee hours of Saturday morning, so I'm pretty exhausted. Weekend Getaway and Two Giveaways

Do you ever wish you could just leave everything behind and take off for a week...or two week...long vacation to a tropical island? Have you ever found yourself dreaming of lying on a quiet beach in Hawaii on a big soft blanket with nothing to do by relax? As this lovely excursion through Dreamland continues, can you feel the balmy breeze leisurely caress your skin as the warmth of the sun on your body and the rhythmic sounds of the gentle waves lull you to sleep?

(My apologies, but I must interrupt this lovely daydream for a trip back to reality.)

I'm so sorry that I had to do that to you, but doesn't that sound like a pretty amazing vacation? I'm sure it would be, but you know what I've discovered? I've discovered that some of the best vacations are the short one or two day trips where the destination is no more than an hour or two from home. Last December, I had just such an experience when my parents, sister, and I had a great overnight trip to Monterey, California. to celebrate my birthday.

For those of you that don't know, Monterey, California is a gorgeous coastal community in Northern California, about 115 miles south of San Francisco and 350 miles north of Los Angeles. "The City features a dazzling waterfront along the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a lush urban forest, a rich array of historic and cultural resources, museums, gardens, recreational activities, and a wide variety of special events scheduled throughout the year. Monterey is the home of the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium, located on the street immortalized in John Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row."

Since my birthday is in December (December 4, to be exact), it was very cold in Monterey, but we did not let the cold dampen our spirits. We knew it would be cold, as it was, but we had such a great time anyway! It was so relaxing just to have no place we had to be, no phones that had to be answered, and no commitments, other than what we decided we felt like doing at that moment.

So, what did we decide to do on that trip? First of all, we stayed at a great motel that was tucked back in a huge grouping of trees so that we felt like we were in the forest. I can't remember the name of the motel right now, but I'll look it up and let you know later. One of the things we liked about it was that all four of us were able to stay in the same room, thus saving money and getting to spend time together in the room to play board games, watch our favorite TV shows, and chit chat at night. We weren't all crammed into a tiny room though, as this room was more like a sort of suite. It was basically like two bedrooms in one with a shared bathroom.

After checking into the motel, we spent time walking along Fisherman's Wharf where we took our the binoculars to search the water for sea lions and sea otters. Most of them seemed to be hiding out that day, some underneath part of the pier that was on the far side from where we were. We did get to see some, but we would have been happier if we had been able to see more of them and get closer to them. I think we've been spoiled by how accessible they are in San Francisco.

While on the Wharf, we looked in some of the shops, looked at all the yummy food being sold, tried a sample of the clam chowder that was being handed out, and just enjoyed the sites, sounds, and smells of being on the water. Eventually, one of the sounds you could hear was our stomachs rumbling from hunger so we left the Wharf and drove downtown where we happened upon a restaurant called Rosine's Restaurant.

We didn't know this before going in, but we found out that Rosine's is a family-owned restaurant, and all the family shares in the work, from cooking and baking to serving and greeting. Rosine's has delicious homemade soups, offers large portions, homemade fresh pies, and a yummy selection of delicious, homemade, award-winning cakes. I won't go into detail here as I'm sure your mouth is already watering, but suffice it to say that we loved it so much that we went back later that night for dinner and again the next day for breakfast!!! How's that for a review?! It's no wonder that Rosine's has been around for over 28 years and has been voted 'Best Family Restaurant' and 'Best Desserts' for over 11 years!

After dinner that first night, we took a short drive into Carmel which is absolutely stunning, and is famous for many reasons, one of which is that Clint Eastwood is the former mayor. It's also the place where many movies were filmed, including “East of Eden," “Play Misty for Me," “National Velvet” and hundreds of others. "Celebrities are frequent visitors to the quiet, understated and beautiful town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Many have second homes here. You never know who will sit down at the table next to you in one of our gourmet restaurants, or who you will meet while taking a relaxing walk along the white sands of Carmel Beach."

The whole reason we had driven into Carmel was because my mom had read an article that talked about a shopping center that was supposed to have shops that sold the shabby chic style of decor, my favorite. We arrived at The Barnyard Shopping Village just as the sun was getting ready to set and the wind was picking up....and unfortunately, just as all the stores were closing. We took a quick look around to see if we could find any shops of interest to me, the shabby chic girl, but alas, there were none.

We were all pretty tired and cold by then anyway, so we drove back to our motel, played games, went back to Rosine's for dinner, and went back to the motel where we each climbed into our own bed, snuggled under our covers, and watched a little bit of TV. After the lights went out, I remember us all getting the giggles and talking and laughing late into the night. It was a lot of fun.

The next day, we went back to Rosine's for breakfast where we were now recognized as frequent diners, LOL, had a yummy breakfast, strolled around some more shops in downtown Monterey, and then went home. As I said at the beginning of this blog post, sometimes short trips to places close to home are the best trips of all, and this one was one of those times.....which is why we're going back later today!! This time it's not to celebrate my birthday but just to get away.

I really did plan on writing a post about something other than giveaways today. What happened, you wonder? Well, I didn't go to sleep until about five or six this morning, and then I had to get up at eleven for my medication. Normally I'd just go back to sleep for a little while, but I had the cleaning ladies coming to my apartment today, so what did I do? I got up and cleaned!! LOL!!
First of all, for those of you that don't already know, I have a chronic pain condition. Actually, I now have two chronic pain conditions, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy {RSD}and more recently, Fibromyalgia. Due to the severity of the RSD I'm unable to do some of the typical household chores, such as my bathtub, which is why I have cleaning ladies in the first place...not because I'm some kind of prima donna who can't clean a tiny apartment by myself.
The cleaning ladies have been coming for about a year-and-a-half now, but I still feel awkward when they're here. I mean, I don't look like there is anything wrong with me on the outside so when I'm just sitting on my butt while they're cleaning around me, I feel like a Paris Hilton type of person...which I'm so not! My apartment is only 600 sq. ft. so it's not like I can really hide out anywhere while they clean either.
Actually, they are really nice, and they all know about my condition and why I'm not doing my own cleaning, despite looking young and healthy. See, just goes to show how looks can be deceiving.
So, why do I clean before the cleaning ladies come? Well, I'm not actually cleaning, as I generally keep my apartment clean anyway. What I'm actually doing is straightening out all the clutter so that they can get a vaccuum around. Even though I've lived here for about two-and-a-half years now, I'm still trying to unpack and find places for everything!! Therefore, whenever the cleaning ladies come, I have to pick up everything that's still on the floor and put it on my bed or kitchen table until it all eventually finds a permanent home.
Anyway, by the time they left it was about two in the afternoon. I checked some email and did a few little chores, and then it was time to lay down for awhile. My awhile turned into a three-and-a-half hour nap!! You know when you sleep too long in the daytime when taking a nap, and you wake up all groggy? Well, that's how I was feeling. So, after watching Private Practice, and checking more email, I was too tired to finish the post that I started for today.

My First Post, A Thank You, And A Giveaway!!

Well, I've decided to give blogging another chance! I've been thinking about it for quite awhile, and I figured now was just as good a time as any.

The reason I stopped blogging before was because my perfectionist attitude got in my way. I wanted my blog to look perfect and to have all the cool bells and whistles that I was seeing on other peoples' blogs. The only problem was that I couldn't figure out how to make that happen, and instead of enjoying my blog for its intended purpose...documenting my thoughts, feelings, and my life in general...I just gave up. I decided I didn't want to blog at all if I couldn't have it be perfect from the beginning instead of just learning slowly as I went along. I know, not the best attitude to have.

So, this time around I've decided to take it one step at a time. I'm just going to blog with what I already know how to do, which is write, and the rest will come eventually (If you're wondering, yes, part of my work with my therapist is working on how not to be such a perfectionist, LOL!). I'm so proud of myself for actually managing to get a few blog buttons on here already, and with this post I'm hoping to be able to get a hyperlink working. So, wish me luck!!
